On November 08, 2018, a second BNSF train derailed on the San Bernardino subdivision between Prado Dam and Esperanza, CA, impacting BNSF main line tracks. The first main track was opened on November 08, 2018, at 7:20 a.m. CST, and the second main track was opened on November 08, 2018, at 12:30 p.m. CST.
The derailments added to the congestion the market has already been experiencing due to increased volumes. BNSF implemented the following restrictions as part of the recovery effort:
- On November 8, 2018, at 12:00 p.m. CST, BNSF began restricting units from in-gating at Los Angeles, CA for standard (p-rated) units destined for Pearland, TX; Kansas City, KS; Memphis, TN; and Alliance, TX.
- On November 8, 2018, at 17:00 p.m. CST, BNSF expanded the gate restrictions to additional destinations to further support recovery efforts for these service interruptions. Additional gate restrictions were implemented for standard (p-rated) traffic destined for Rutherford, PA; Croxton, NJ; Austell, GA; Charlotte, NC; and all international traffic.

BNSF has reviewed the current service recovery efforts in Los Angeles, CA, and removed the following restrictions for the Los Angeles, CA, intermodal facilities as of November 10, 2018. BNSF advised customers to in-gate per normal procedures at their Los Angeles, CA, facilities for the destinations listed below.
- Removed the in-gate restrictions for standard (p-rated) traffic destined for Pearland, TX; Kansas City, KS; Memphis, TN; and Alliance, TX.
- Removed the in-gate restrictions for standard (p-rated) traffic destined for Rutherford, PA; Croxton, NJ; Austell, GA; Charlotte, NC; and all international traffic.
Update Report: Wildfires on the UP Canyon Subdivision
On Friday, November 9, 2018, at 13:45 p.m. CST, BNSF received a preliminary report of a fire on the UP Canyon subdivision near Pulga, CA. Pulga, CA, is 152 miles north of Sacramento, CA. BNSF field personnel are on site working with California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and other first responders. Currently, BNSF is rerouting trains around the wildfires as conditions permit.
MIQ Logistics will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as available from BNSF. Delays in and out of Long Beach should be expected, which, of course will impact the entire BNSF network.
