CANADA’S ‘CARM’ PROJECT TO CHANGE THE WAY IMPORTERS PAY DUTIES AND TAXES

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) Assessment and Revenue Management (CARM) project will directly impact, modernize, and streamline the import process of shipments entering Canada by transforming the collection of duties and taxes for commercial goods.

Importers will have easy access to reviewing account balances and direct payment options, along with several other helpful tools to simplify the import process, including the ability to request Customs rulings, access the CBSA Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) and estimate duties and taxes for your imports.

Phase 1 of the CARM portal is now live, giving importers the ability to learn more about the upcoming requirements for payment of duties and taxes to CBSA. While no action is required at this time, CBSA will require that all importers set up their account ahead of the phase 2 start date, currently slated for May 2022.

As new information on this rollout is continuously being provided from CBSA, Noatum Logistics will be sending out our next Trade Alert on this topic on or around October 1, 2021. This will include guidance on setting up your CARM account as well as Noatum Logistics contact information where you can direct any questions at that time.

You are encouraged to review the CBSA Information Sheet  registering your business in the CARM Client Portal in order to help ensure a smooth set up this fall, ahead of the phase 2 start date next year.

If you have any questions, please contact your Noatum Logistics representative.
