New Tariffs on All Imports from Mexico

On May 30, 2019, in an effort to further address illegal immigration from Mexico, the White House announced  that a 5 percent tariff will be imposed on goods from Mexico effective June 10, 2019. This action is being taken under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977. Per the announcement, the tariffs will be increased pursuant to the following schedule if Mexico does not take sufficient steps to stop illegal immigration:

  • 10 percent on July 1, 2019
  • 15 percent on August 1, 2019
  • 20 percent on September 1, 2019
  • 25 percent on October 1, 2019

Rates will then remain at 25 percent until Mexico has “taken action to dramatically reduce or eliminate the number of illegal aliens crossing its territory into the United States.”

MIQ will share anticipated Federal Register updates and subsequent enforcement details when available. At this time, we expect that NAFTA will apply for qualifying goods and that these additional tariffs would be in addition to any existing rates.
