WASHINGTON, November 8, 2022 – Retailers expect a busy holiday season the next two months but imports at the nation’s major container ports should continue to slow from records set earlier in the year, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released today by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

On November 7th, the National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane and storm surge watch for the east coast of Florida. Floridians located on the east coast are being advised to prepare for another storm less than 6 weeks after Hurricane Ian’s landfall. The storm has been named Nicole and is forecasted to strengthen over the next couple of days, possibly to hurricane levels. Hurricane Nicole’s path is uncertain at this time but could strike the east coast of Florida.

Yesterday on October 10th railroad union (BMWED) Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Division announced the conclusion of their vote on the proposed five-year contract, majority being opposed to the adoption of the tentative agreement.
WASHINGTON, October 7, 2022 – Imports at the nation’s major container ports are expected to fall to their lowest level in nearly two years by the end of 2022 even though retail sales continue to grow, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released today by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.
Three Transpacific services cut by MSC, Maersk, and CMA, and CGM due to the rapid decline of import demand and spot ocean freight rates. This cut is important because it gives insight on how rapidly carriers are reducing capacity.

ILA Prepares for Future Coastwide Talks
The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) has requested its local unions to begin selecting negotiators for the up incoming negotiations on port-specific issues, with a goal to extend the master contract covering all ports along the US East and Gulf coasts. The ILA is planning to work on local contract talks as it seeks to avoid any disruptions on the East and Gulf coasts that could derail negotiations overextending the master contract ahead of the current deal’s 2024 expiry.
Hurricane Ian is expected to impact Central and South Florida on Wednesday, September 28th. All South Florida Ports, to include both the Port of Miami and Port Everglades have been closed in anticipation of the storm. All airports, including Miami International airport, have already canceled a majority of flights ahead of the expected deteriorating conditions. Supply chain delays should be expected until weather conditions improve.
